The historic Opera House in downtown Boothbay Harbor received a facelift this winter. The sound of music that typically fills the the old hall was replaced with the sound of hammers and saws and drills and sanders as nearly two dozen painters and craftsmen installed new flooring and railings, raised the stage, painted ceilings, and patched walls and restored the House from top to bottom. Insulation was added and a new, efficient heating and hot water system was installed. New lighting and an in-house sound system were also added this winter. The work was undertaken to both preserve the old building and improve the experience of audience members by improving sight lines.
The work began with the rebuilding of the front stairway on Townsend Avenue last fall, and will continue with additional work throughout the spring. With the completion of the new entryway on Townsend Avenue, ticket buyers may now use the front door during the week versus entering through the side parking lot door. The performance entrance remains on Smith Street.
The first performance of 2011 is this weekend’s Hometown Hootenanny on Saturday, March 5 at 7:30 PM. The
event is both a cabin fever reliever and a fundraiser for the Opera House, with all proceeds going to assist with the ongoing operation of the building and programming.
Funds are still being raised to complete the maintenance and restoration work. In an effort to meet the Bosarge Challenge, the Opera House must raise $95,000 between now and September. Those interested in supporting the effort are invited to contact the Opera House at (207) 633-6855.
