On July 21, fishing communities across Maine will unite to honor those lost at sea on Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day. On July 21, fishing communities across Maine will unite to honor those lost at sea on Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day. This year’s observance marks a historic milestone, as Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day is now officially recognized in Maine law, ensuring that the sacrifices of Maine’s fishing families will be remembered for generations to come.
The ceremony will feature the history and significance of the Fishermen’s Memorial, a ceremonial wreath laying by the Maine Marine Patrol Honor Guard, a tribute honoring Maine’s commercial fishermen who have been lost at sea, remarks from the Maine Governor Janet Mills and Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Carl Wilson, updates on commercial fishing safety initiatives, and other special presentations.
Immediately following the ceremony, guests are invited to join us for a reception at Mine Oyster featuring hearty hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The reception offers an opportunity for fishing families, industry members, community leaders, and supporters to gather in fellowship, remembrance, and shared commitment to a safer future for Maine’s commercial fishing community.
